Going with grunt not green, Morgan announces the big growling GTR….
If you’ve had enough of car manufacturers fighting for the ‘green pound’ proudly pronouncing ‘we’re going electric, too’, the recent announcement from the Worcestershire countryside will be a blessed relief. The announcement is the development of new the Morgan Plus 8 GTR, a proper V8 sports car with an even bigger puffed out chest than the Malvern norm.
A very limited run of naturally aspirated specials built on a ‘handful’ of Morgan chassis has suddenly become possible after Morgan enigmatically claimed these chassis have been ‘reclaimed from a discontinued project outside of the company’. Hmmm…very interesting. Some industry sources are speculating these chassis could be left over from the ill-fated Bristol Bullet of some years ago. If that is accurate it makes these Plus 8’s even more desirable.
According the company’s blurb, “The Plus 8 GTR gives Morgan designers and engineers the opportunity to reignite one of the marque’s heroic legacy models with a ‘gloves off’ special edition”. This should be some car even by Morgan’s elevated standards. The production run will be limited to just nine examples.
As part of their transformation from rolling (Bristol Bullet?) chassis to finished vehicle, each GTR will be hand built using Morgan’s traditional coachbuilding techniques. The Plus 8 GTR will run alongside core programmes being one of several exciting Morgan special projects to be announced this year.
The GTR will be powered by a 5.0ltr V8 unit producing nearly 400bhp A choice of a six-speed manual or ZF six-speed automatic gearbox will be available.
Prices have yet to be released but you can bet your house that deposits for all nine cars have been placed already.
