What is it like to rediscover a classic car that you previously loved?
As he was reunited with his world beating Porsche 924 GTS recently, who better to know the answer to that than the legendary Walther Rohrl. We see what his thoughts are.
Röhrl is rally racing royalty, end of. But surprisingly the native German raced for Porsche for only one rally season. That was 40 years ago, in the 1981 season, behind the wheel of this classic gold-and-black Porsche 924 GTS. Röhrl and his then co-driver Christian Geistdörfer won four races, coming second overall in the championship. After that successful but all to brief period, the pair signed up to Team Opel. Porsche must have kicked themselves.
Porsche have now carried out a stunning restoration of this classic Porsche rally car. The meticulous restoration was completed at Porsche's historic motor racing department in Weissach. By pure coincidence, the very same garage where the car was born on 12 December 1980, it is the fifth of nine prototypes for Porsche’s then newly created rally department.
The Head of the Workshop, Kuno Werner said “The biggest problem in recommissioning the car was not the technology, but keeping it secret.” The secretive plan was to arrive at the front door of The World Record holder, surprising him on his 74th birthday. “But Walter still knows so many people here that it was difficult to keep the project quiet.” With all the team sworn to secrecy they somehow managed to pull it off.
When the team arrived at Rohrl’s doorstep you can only imagine his face at being confronted with an old friend like this. “It was a huge surprise for me,” commented a delighted Walter Röhrl. “I stepped out of the car 40 years ago and haven’t sat in it again since. That is why I feel a particularly close bond to it. For me, it’s a journey back in time. I immediately feel 40 years younger.”
And those classic words probably sums up perfectly the absolute joy and pleasure of classic car ownership. #FortyYearsYounger.
