DeLorean may be a thing of the past, but that could all be set to change as DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) predicts it will be able to again produce the famous DMC-12 as early as Summer 2021.
Over four years ago, DMC, announced it planned to build a new DMC-12 from “new old stock”. Since then, nothing has happened. Reports suggest US law makers intervened blocking Delorean’s plans, citing the lack of modern safety regulations as a major barrier to production.
Last year a Trade Association (SEMA) filed a claim against Federal lawmakers. News released in the last week reveal the regulators have amended their position and Delorean can proceed using so-called ‘small vehicle production’ rules as their route around the lawmakers objections.
There are still a few hurdles, but DeLorean looks closer than ever to getting a DMC-12 on road.
DeLorean's Vice President, Espey commented "Realistically, I wouldn't expect to see production begin until at the earliest the summer or fall of 2021”.
Details of the new DMC-12 are being tightly guarded, but are said to include an all new engine along with modern equipment, but retaining the same iconic looks.
The company has floated a price tag of around $100,000 for a modern DeLorean. It's hard to put a price on nostalgia.
