Helen Clifford broke through to become the first female bus engineer and driver to boot....
The much-loved double decker bus has kept Londoners moving for as long as anyone can recall.
But astonishingly it was not until as recently as 1983 that women were officially recognised as being responsible for keeping them on the road as qualified bus engineers. The very first female to do so, was Helen Clifford. At the age of 18, Helen qualified as London Transport's first female bus engineer after successfully finishing her training at London’s busy West Ham garage.
Up until 1974 the activity of driving a bus was a role which only men could do, apparently. Helen also qualified as a bus driver. Two glass ceilings broken.
